Police appeal for informants

Police appeal for informants to call back – despite claims over arrest of activists

The first week of August saw a total of 14 arrests, the most of any year for 2015.

Since the end of last year, police and others have made over 25,000 enquiries for information on activists' activities or potential troublemakers, according to Operation Sovereign Borders.

Since 2009, Operation Sovereign Borders has targeted activists, media, and others, including those who appear in propaganda or campaign videos.

'No time to lose'

The figures released by Operation Sovereign Borders show the number of people it is now taking into custody for suspected "protest activities" at a rate of over 17,000 a week.

However, Operation Sovereign Borders did not break down how many had been detained for "obstruction of public order", as such an offence was defined under legislation introduced by the previous government of former Prime Minister David Cameron.

The latest report highlights that since last year, police have been "preventing protesters from attending demonstrations or activities they have planned."

It added: "We cannot lose our opportunity to protect the rights of all citizens. We cannot afford to risk the safety of our communities. We must use this time to deter and investigate the activists who pose a threat to our security."

Operation Sovereign Borders is the largest anti-terror operation ever mounted in the UK. In the past year police have carried out around 7,500 arrests and spent close to £20m in a bid to disrupt and reduce radicalisation in the UK.
