Business blasts abbotts parental leave plan
The abbot of St. Paul's Cathedral who ran for mayor with a pledge to ban religious symbols from city streets was fired yesterday.
Mayor Chris Coleman was forced to call police to break up a rally in opposition to an abbot who planned to wear a Muslim headscarf in front of the cathedral after learning of his plans, city officials said.
The abbot said he was offended by what he saw as discrimination toward religion in this city.
Abbas Youssef, the president of the St. Paul Board of Alders and Bylaws, said Coleman was fired on the spot. A city spokesman said he would not comment on rumors.
"The city is working with all concerned parties and with the governor's office and the Minnesota Supreme Court to provide clarity with regards to the specific issues we are being asked about," said spokesman Mark Bevan.
The mayor's staff also said the city is working with state officials to understand how the proposed ban may conflict with another religious observance — the wearing of a head scarf at City Hall, a public place that is the property of the bishop of each diocese and a public employee — since those two groups are not allowed to wear the burqa.
A bill sponsored by Rep. Mike Schulz, DFL-Minneapolis, would prohibit the wearing of all or parts of a religious item at city hall while the state or city ordinances would allow them to display other clothing in public places.
