Strong winds deter beach

Strong winds deter beach crowds and create a safer surface, which means they attract fewer visitors. Beach management keeps track of beach activity using real-time satellite imagery, or RLA-X, which can then be used to improve land management plans in the future.

"It is encouraging to see such progress, but it still has a long way to go," says Jim Hoch, project director for the RLA-X. "The data continues to grow and the analysis by the teams around the country continues to improve."

A million chinese evacuated over fatal floods in east China's Tianjin province

The city, in south-eastern China, is only 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the capital Beijing and is near a dam that holds back huge amounts of water.

A Chinese official said that nearly six inches (15cm) of rain had fallen in the city, which was hit by strong flooding late on Sunday.

In an earlier report, a Chinese newspaper quoted Li Xizhi, deputy chief of the emergency services in the Tianjin district, as saying that 1.6m tonnes of debris had fallen onto the roads of the area - the highest amount since 2002.

The government is mobilising more water-related personnel, including army and police, and the governor has banned cars from leaving the city centre and temporarily closed some roads.

Meanwhile, a man died in his own home and his five children were hurt by flash flooding, an official said, while an eight-year-old girl was also crushed by a falling tree.

The capital, at a scale of 5,000 inhabitants, is also being held hostage by Chinese authorities over political unrest and a surge in trade union protests.

China's central government says more than 20 government officials are under investigation over allegedly taking bribes during the 2009 protests in Hong Kong, but protesters say the authorities are failing to put down protests and are ignoring calls for greater democratic reform.

The country's police chief has asked to visit Hong Kong because he said a mass gathering was taking place there, raising fears about the extent to which security agencies, under pressure, may be losing control.
